You probably learned about photosynthesis in grade school- the way that plants use light from the sun to make energy in their cells. Did you know that your cells can also absorb light waves, and these light waves can create several useful reactions? This is called photobiomodulation (PBM), and it has been proven to increase blood flow, increase a cell’s metabolism, increase oxygenation of cells, modulate inflammation, and reduce pain. We use a Summus Horizon Class IV Laser at King Chiropractic & Laser in order to get the best results for our patients.
What Is Class IV Laser Therapy?
Our Summus Horizon Class IV laser uses four specific red and near infrared wavelengths of light to produce photochemical reactions at the cellular level. There are many types or lasers and LEDs on the market and they are not all created equal. We recently upgraded to the Summus Laser because it is one of the most powerful lasers on the market so we can get faster results for our patients. We have also received special training and have become certified laser providers by Summus.
The four different wavelengths on our Summus Horizon laser each have different functions:
• 650nm: Targets superficial tissues, increases cellular regeneration
• 810nm: Targets mitochondria is cells, increases ATP (cellular energy) production, penetrates deeply into the tissues
• 915nm: Targets hemoglobin, increases oxygen delivery to tissues, provides pain relief, speeds healing time
• 980nm: Targets water in blood, improves circulation, provides pain relief, speeds healing time
Laser therapy is completely drug-free and painless and usually only takes a few minutes to deliver. Most people start to feel some relief right away.

Is laser therapy safe?
Yes, it is very non-invasive and safe when performed properly. Our doctors and technicians have been trained by Summus to apply it safely. This includes knowing when not to do it (over pregnant belly, over tumor, etc), how quickly to move the laser to prevent excess heating of the skin, and always wearing eye protection.
Is laser therapy approved by the FDA?
Yes, class 4 laser therapy was approved by the FDA for medical use in 2003.
Is it painful?
Not at all. In fact, most people find it soothing. It feels like a warm, gentle massage.
Are there any side effects?
Usually there are not any side effects. Occasionally patients will notice increased soreness for 24-48 hours after the treatment. We always start with a lower intensity until we see how a patient responds, as some people are more sensitive than others.
Is this a new treatment?
Not really, although it has been gaining popularity in the US lately as patients are looking for more drug-free options. Doctors have been using laser therapy in Europe for decades, and veterinarians have been using it on their furry patients for many years as well.
Why is laser not covered by insurance?
Insurance companies are profit-driven, so they tend to not cover things unless there is adequate pressure to do so. It took chiropractors several decades to get their services covered by insurance companies, and most companies still don’t cover massage therapy or acupuncture. Without the lobbying power of big pharmaceutical companies, it is difficult to influence insurance companies. Since laser is a relatively newer treatment, it could take many years before insurance companies cover it.
How much does laser therapy cost?
Depending on the size of the area being treated, most body parts are between $40-80 per session. We also offer discounted packages of 5 or 10 sessions.
