RELIEF With
Pressure Wave
The human body is amazing at healing itself, but sometimes the healing process becomes stalled and your body starts to “ignore” the problem, leading to chronic pain and dysfunction. One of the most effective ways to reactivate the healing process is by using Radial Pressure Wave (sometimes called “extracorporeal shockwave therapy” ).
What is Radial Pressure Wave?
RPW is a handheld device with a small projectile that is quickly accelerated towards the applicator tip, which produces a pressure wave that is transmitted into the treatment area. This is called mechanotransduction.
How does it work?
The pressure waves propagate through your cells and creates controlled microtrauma. This may sound like a bad thing, but it is what your body needs in order to re-activate your body’s healing process. The same concept applies to things like Graston Technique, prolotherapy, and PRP injections. Studies have shown that mechanotransduction causes:
· Increased blood flow and vascularization
· Increased collagen production
· Cellular migration and proliferation
· Interruption of pain signals
In turn, these effects lead to:
· Less pain
· Increased range of motion
· Scar tissue being broken up and remodeled
· “Knots” or trigger points being broken up
· Chronic injuries finally healing
What does it work best for?
- Tendinopathies
- Rotator cuff tendinitis
- Biceps tendinitis
- Epicondylitis (tennis/golfer’s elbow)
- Gluteal tendinitis
- Infrapatellar tendinitis
- Iliotibial band syndrome
- Achilles tendinitis
- Plantar fasciitis
- Osteoarthritis
- Shoulders, elbows, wrists, fingers
- Hips, knees, ankles, feet
- Muscles
- Chronic muscle tension
- Trigger points
- Scar tissue from old injuries
What does it feel like?
When using the RPW over normal tissue, there is no discomfort, just a mild thumping sensation. However, when the RPW is used over an area of scar tissue or trigger points, there is some discomfort.
Sometimes it feels like a deep ache and sometimes like a stinging sensation. In this way, it acts like a diagnostic tool, helping to pinpoint the dysfunctional tissue. The clinician checks in regularly with the patient to make sure the discomfort never exceeds a 6 out of 10 on the pain scale (0 meaning no pain, 10 being unbearable).
Are there any risks?
Very few. RPW is non-invasive and very safe. Sometimes there can be some temporary soreness or redness after the treatment. People with blood clotting disorders or who are taking blood thinners should not use RPW as it could cause excessive bruising. It is also contra-indicated over pregnant bellies, tumors, growth plates in children, artificial joints/hardware, and electrical implants.
How long are the treatments?
Depending on the area treated, usually between 5-15 min.
How many treatments are needed?
Typically around 3-5 weekly treatments are needed for best results. More severe or chronic problems might require 6-8 treatments.
How soon are results felt?
Most people will feel some relief after even just one treatment, but the full effect is usually felt after several weeks. It takes time for your body to reabsorb broken up scar tissue and lay down new healthy tissue.
Is this covered by insurance?
No, RPW is not currently covered by any health insurances.
How much does it cost?
It is $70 for one body area or $110 for two body areas. We also offer packages of four treatments for a discounted price.
